How to reset e-Filing password – 5 ways Explained

Many of use open e-Filing portal once in a year. Hence, there is a possibility to forget the password. In such a situation, how to reset e-Filing password? There are 5 ways to do the same. Let me explain all of them in detail.

Before proceeding further, you have to visit the e-Filing homepage. Then click on the “Forget Password” option.

Next, you have to enter your USER ID (Your PAN number is the User ID) and also the captcha code.  Visually challenged users can request for OTP (which will be sent your registered mobile number). Then click on the tab “Continue”.

Let me now explain one by one way to reset e-Filing password.

1. Answer Secret Question

At the time of registration to the e-Filing portal, you have to select two secret questions and you have to fill the answer to those two questions. These two questions will be now helpful for you to reset the password.

If you have chosen the option “Answer the secret question” to reset your password, then select the same from the drop down menu and click on continue. The new webpage will open where you have to enter your date of birth and select one question from the drop-down menu. Enter the answer to that question and click on submit.

Once you answered the question correctly, then you have to enter the new password. Enter the new password, confirm the same by entering once again, and click on submit. You will get a message on your screen once the password is reset.

2. Upload Digital Signature Certificate

The second option to reset your password is by uploading your DSC (Digital Signature Certificate). You must have your DSC ready.

From the drop-down menu of choosing options, this time select ‘Upload DSC’ option. Again from the drop-down menu, you have to select one of the following options:
a) New DSC- If you have DSC generated and using the first time.
b) Registered DSC-If you have DSC generated but not using the first time.

After that, attach the file generated by you and click on validate. Once DSC is validated, you have to enter the new password and confirm it. Click on Submit. You will get a message that your password is reset.

3. Using OTP (PINs)

The third option to reset your password is by selecting the option “Using OTP (PINs) method. If you are an NRI, then you will be required to select a tick box as your claim of being NRI will be verified from the PAN database.

There may be cases like few may be registered their Email ID and Mobile numbers and few may not. Hence, here you will find two options to reset.

a) If you have an existing Email ID and Mobile Number Registered

There are two options to reset the password using OTP based. One is through email and another through the mobile number. Hence, select one of the options below to receive the OTP as per your comfort.

You can select either of the options as per your comfort. There you will find that your existing email ID and phone numbers are partially visible on your screen. If the details according to you are correct, you will be required to select the option to receive the OTP.

Then click on the validate button. You will receive the OTP to your registered Email ID or mobile number as per your option is chosen. Enter the same click on “Validate” tab. Once the OTP is successfully validated, enter the new password and confirm it.

b) New Email ID and mobile number

If you want to receive the OTP to a different email ID and mobile, you will be asked to enter the new email id and mobile number in the required fields. For security purposes, you will be required to select one of the options-

  • TDS/TCS deduction details
  • b) Bank Account Number

If you have selected the first option “TDS/TCS deduction details”, then you have to mention TAN of the deductor, assessment year and total tax deducted by the deductor. You will get this information either in Form 26AS or Form 16.

If you have selected the section option “Bank Account”, then enter the bank account as mentioned by you in your previous year ITR.

Once you validate any one of the above details, then two different OTPs will be sent to your new mobile number and email ID. Enter the OTPs in the required fields and click on “validate”. You have to then enter the new password and confirm it. Click on submit and a successful message will be displayed for a change of password.

Do remember that for security purpose, an email will be sent to your registered and new email id as well with the subject ‘Cancellation for the password reset request’. In case the password reset was requested by you, then click on the link mentioned in the email to cancel the request. This link is valid only for 12 hours. You will be required to validate your PAN and date of birth while canceling the password reset request.

4. Using Aadhaar OTP

To reset e-Filing password using Aadhaat OTP based option, you must have your mobile number linked to Aadhaar and also your Aadhaar must be linked to PAN.

Once you select the option “Using Aadhaar OTP) from the drop-down menu, enter the Aadhaar number in the required field and click on ‘Generate OTP option’.

An OTP will be sent via SMS to your registered mobile number. Enter the same in the OTP field and click on “validate”. After successful validation, you have to enter the new password and confirm it. You will get a message that your password is reset.

5. e-Filing Login Through NetBanking

Below the drop-down menu of selecting the above 4 options, there is one more new link is provided as “e-Filing Login Through NetBanking”. You have to click this. Then you have to select the banks from the below list.

After selecting the bank, you have to login by using the internet banking facility of your bank username and passwords. Then click on the link “Login to the IT e-Filing account” e-Filing user Dashboard screen will be displayed.

Now you can change the password under “Profile settings”.

    Thanks for this article, it really helped me a lot in updating my personal details and Aadhar details at the IT website. Mine was a bit complicated issue, linking of Aadhar to PAN was pending from quite a few months even after trying various options. Linking through the netbanking option worked for me. Thanks again.

    As you know very well that all subsidiary banks such as State bank of Mysore, State bank of Patiala, State Bank of Hyderabad etc. have been merged, months ago, with State Bank of India then why are you mentioning those banks under ‘List of Banks providing the e-Filing login facility’. Please do necessary correction.
