What is Financial Planning?

Financial planning goes beyond the mere buying or investing of products such as Life Insurance, Mutual Funds, Fixed Deposits, or Bonds, or purchasing them solely in March for tax-saving purposes. It is a comprehensive process that enables you to make well-informed decisions about your finances, ultimately assisting you in reaching your life goals.

The most crucial aspect in matters related to money is trustworthiness. In today’s world, one can observe a multitude of individuals posing as financial advisers, bankers, or financial planners. Consequently, finding a planner who operates without conflicts of interest becomes a significant challenge. Fortunately, with the recent implementation of SEBI RIA Regulations, it has now become possible for many individuals to identify Fixed Fee-Only Financial Planners who are registered with SEBI as Registered Investment Advisers.

I am a Fixed Fee-Only Financial Planner registered with SEBI, and I possess over 15 years of experience in this field. I hold the esteemed Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification, which is recognized globally and signifies a commitment to ethical and professional financial planning.

Additionally, I have been running a personal finance blog called BasuNivesh for the past 12 years, which has achieved a prominent position among the top 10 personal finance blogs in India. Throughout this period, I have authored over 900 articles on various aspects of personal finance.

Financial Planning Service

I offer three types of financial planning modules. The first one is the Basic Financial Planning module, second one is Advanced Financial Planning Module, and the third is the Do It Yourself (DIY) module. The primary purpose of classifying in such a way is that those who have a limited income or total net worth and cannot afford the Advanced Financial Planning Module or DIY module fee can opt for the Basic Financial Planning module. On the other hand, those who have the financial means and aspire to become their own financial planner in the future can choose the Advanced Financial Planning Module or DIY module.

The initial step towards ensuring a simplified financial planning process is crucial. That is why I have embraced an approach that is both straightforward and cost-effective. Through this approach, you will gain knowledge about low-cost index investment and uncomplicated investment strategies that will yield better long-term results compared to more complicated and costly alternatives.

I follow the passive approach of investing by recommending majorly in Index Funds for equity. Importance of this process is avoiding investment mistakes, losses and freedom from effort.

✍️ Financial Planning Process

You can contact me using the “Contact Us” page of my website. Alternatively, you can email me at [email protected] or drop a Whatsapp message at +91 6361835871.

Once we determine a mutually suitable time, I will schedule a Google Meeting. Our meeting will be lasting not more than 30 minutes. During this session, I will focus on understanding your requirements, introducing the Goal Based Financial Planning Approach, and outlining the subsequent steps I will undertake.

Once the process and fee are agreed upon, I will share you two documents.

Client Engagement Letter – This is a formal letter of engagement, as required by SEBI Regulations. If you agree to the terms, please print the letter, sign it, and send us a scanned copy via email.

Client Questionnaire – This is an Excel template where you will provide details about your current financial status, including family information (financial dependents), goals, assets, liabilities, income, expenses, and your responses to risk tolerance questions.

Additionally, you will need to make the full payment using the provided bank details or UPI details. Once I receive the scanned copy of the signed “Client Engagement Letter”, KYC documents, and the completed “Client Questionnaire,” I will schedule a 30-minute follow-up meeting. During this meeting, I will review your data in detail and address any queries you may have.

This process consists of three key steps: Education, Planning, and Execution.

Education (Applicable for DIY Module) – In this module, I will conduct three one-hour educational sessions with you. In the first one hour session, I will explain the concept of asset allocation, it’s importance and which asset classes we have to include and exclude along with valid reasons and logic. In the second one hour session, I will guide you on understanding different financial products and how we can build the portfolio using the available products. Finally, in the third one hour, I will explain how to plan your insurance purchases, as well as the considerations you should make when purchasing products. I’ll also go over the latest tax regulations and how to effectively plan your taxes.

Planning – After these educational sessions, I will proceed to prepare a financial planning with your provided data. Typically, it takes 1-2 weeks for me to prepare and send you the finalized plan.

Execution – Once you receive the plan, I encourage you to review it thoroughly and compile any questions or concerns you may have. Our subsequent meeting will not exceed one hour, during which I will address these queries to the best of my abilities. Once you have a clear understanding of the plan, you can proceed with its implementation. I work on a Fixed Fee-Only Module, which means that the client assumes responsibility for implementing the recommendations. However, I will be available to assist you if you encounter any difficulties during the implementation process.

I will schedule 30-minute follow up meeting once in every three months (after our planning discussion) to understand your needs better and address any questions or concerns you may have. Throughout our engagement, I will plan three follow-up calls to support you with implementation-related challenges, although these calls are not meant for portfolio reviews.

Additionally, please feel free to reach out to me at any point during the year if you have any doubts, inquiries, or changes to your financial situation. I am here to assist you whenever you need help.

I follow the annual review process for your financial plan. However, if there are any extraordinary circumstances, such as a significant market crash or changes in your financial status, I am open to conducting a mid-year review based on the actual need.

Please note that even after I deliver the financial plan, you can always reach out to me during the one-year engagement period to discuss any matters related to personal finance, investing, or your financial planning.

If your financial or life situation undergoes changes requiring modifications to the plan, I am more than willing to hold additional sessions to accommodate these adjustments. Your evolving needs are my priority.

General Questions

I am fluent in Kannada, Hindi and English. Hence, I can interact with any of these three languages as per your comfort.

Our all meetings will be through online mode (preferably Google Meeting). However, if you are from Bangalore and willing to meet personally, then we can schedule physical meeting based on both of our convenient day and time.

I am currently located in Bangalore, India. However, with the advancement in connectivity like online meetings (audio and video) and email communication, we can easily connect across globe. Hence, distance is not a barrier in opting for service. I have existing clients across India and globe.

I am in this industry since 15 years. However, to know more about my journey and achievements, you can refer “About Us” page.

As I don’t research on Crypto Currency or direct stocks, I will not advice on them. When it comes to equity, my recommendation revolves around equity mutual funds (majorly in Index Funds).

As I do a goal based planning, I do consider real estate and gold as an asset classes in the financial plan if you want same for self-consumption.

However, real estate investment is currently not fully regulated in India. Hence, the returns from real estate investment is difficult to predict. At the same time, considering the real estate for self-consumption involves hefty tax and hence I stay out of it.

In case of gold, past 100 years’ data shows that it is highly volatile asset like equity but returns are like debt instruments. (Refer the various articles I have written on Gold.)

Hence, I avoid recommending in gold.

Yes, I do review of your existing portfolio and recommend you to align to your financial goals. After the review, I provide specific recommendations like continuing or stopping.

Tax Planning is a part of financial planning. However, I will not provide any tax filing kind of service. Even in case of tax planning, if I came across the complexity, then I suggest you to take the help of expert CA.

I follow the yearly review process. However, during the engagement, if you came across any doubts or questions, you can always approach me (with prior intimation and scheduling a meeting).

At the same time, if there is any change in the strategy or the product I suggested (due to certain circumstances which are beyond prediction), then I will come forward and suggest you such changes.
