Accidents while travelling in the train is rare. However, it does not mean that it can’t happen. Hence, it is always best to get protected yourself by proper insurance. Considering all these aspects, Indian Railway offering you Rs.10 lakh travel insurance at the cost of just 92 paise for each individual.
The real test and importance travel insurance came to know during the recent Indore-Patna Express Rail Accident on 20th November, 2016. The rail had on board 695 passengers (including 2 infants) on reserved seats. Out of them, 128 had opted for the insurance, which was paid at the time of booking e-tickets. With PNR 4432634121 today I have eBooked my journey from Pugalur to Tambaram (insurance is not included). Please suggest how to get travel insurance for the above journey.now.
Balasubramanian-If you booked through IRCTC, then accidental insurance is a default.
I already booked the tickets on irctc for 23 Dec. 16 which is in waiting list, but i forget to opt for travel insurance. Is there any chance to opt for travel insurance now Basavaraj...
Mahesh-Now you can't opt. The only option is to cancel and rebook (which may not be acceptable in your condition).
Thanks Basu for sharing such nice information. Travel insurance option can also be introduced over the counter booking. So, that all the passengers can be benefited. This is just a query. Other wise provision of travel insurance by IRCTC is a great effort in the interest of the passengers. Commendable efforts.
Santanu-I hope soon they will make it as compulsory.
It is good to see that indian railway has implemented the low cost insurance to travellers in optional. But while booking how would a stranger will get aware of .92 paisa. So, bcoz I would request u to mention details even price, so that every body will get entitle to tick. And it will have impact to change amendment compulsory to all.
Balakrushna-While booking if you not select, then it ask you the option to either select YES or NO.
This is a great initiative taken by Indian government. This is a win win situation for both the passengers and the Indian government. I believe Indian Railways is making 7-8 figures everyday just by implementing travel insurance schemes. This money can be used for the development of Indian railways. Kudos to them.
Thank U
Its OK If we get refund amount of cancellation Ticket as per IRCTC. The cost of insurance .92 paise, is as uncountable deduction comparing to deduction by IRCTC as per cancellation rule.
Its good initiative by railway, but now they are trying to implement Aadhar Card as compulsory ID for booking, it may cause delay in booking in peak hrs especially at Tatkal hrs. and carrying the same ID in journey as token of Identity proof at the time TTE checking. Passengers may face hurdles. Please share yours veiw on this.
Rajik-Yes, I understand your concern. But Aadhaar is one proof where all your personal information is available. Hence, they want to implement it in all aspects of our life.
Hi very nice article what about the tickets which are already booked can we add insurance to it.
Please let me know the process if we can add as I planned in October and December 2016
Prasanth-The process is explained in above post.
I VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT AT LAST IR STARTED DOING INS URANCE WHILETRAVELING TO AND FRO WHILE BOOKING E-TICKETING. IT IS IMMESE HELP TO TRAVELLERS.
Indra-Pleasure to know :)
Railways is already rounding up to the next 5 rupees on the fare, so doesn't it justify for railways to put the extra 1 or 2 rupees they charge from us to pay for the insurance without asking us to pay additionally?
Raja-I am not sure about their rounding off rules. Can you share that information?
5. Rounding-off of fares:
5.1 Fares of all classes except Second Class Ordinary (Suburban).
Chargeable Fares, as obtained after adding Miscellaneous
Charges like Reservation Fee, Supplementary charge for
Superfast trains, Catering Charge, Service Tax etc. to the
Basic Fare, will be rounded off to the next higher multiple of
Rs. 5.

Raja-Thanks for sharing. But I think they exclude this charge from rounding off.
Thanks Basav...
Once again fr sharing such fruitful info .
Online booking for travel insurance ....really good bt only one thing we must keep in mind that if we cancel the ticket during emergency too we will not get any refund rt. But I think to get such high lucrative coverage and that too with such low premium ...why Indian railway will bargain fr cancellation refund ...
Shivani-Pleasure to see your comment :) In insurance once premium paid and policy issued, then there is no option to cancel. Hence, this rule.
Sir
very informative post
You mentioned that Once the premium is paid, then no cancellations are allowed. Accordingly, no refund of premium will be made in all cases including waitlisted ticket. Its means their is no chance to cancel the ticket or their is no refund for cancellation?
Rajik-Cancellation of ticket may be possible as per IRCTC rules. But cancellation of this travel insurance cost is not possible. Once you pay 92 paise, then it is over. While refuding due to cancellation, they will not consider this travel insruance premium.
