I hold credit cards issued by Citibank and American Express.
I do not have any (bank) account with Citibank, only credit cards! Likewise with American Express (which only issues credit / charge cards and does not a banking licence in India).
I received an email from Citibank asking me to link Aadhaar card to a credit card!! It came as a surprise because, as far as I am aware, the requirement is link Aadhaar with bank account(s).
The FAQs on Citibank website state – “As per the Prevention of Money Laundering Second Amendment Rules issued dated June 1, 2017, it is mandatory to update your Aadhaar number across all financial products, including bank accounts, credit cards and personal loans.”
The FAQs are available here – https://goo.gl/GC5VWP
(see answer to question – Is Aadhaar number update required only for bank accounts or for credit cards and personal loans as well?)
Can someone confirm if this requirement is indeed in the rules?
Interestingly, I have not received any such request from American Express! Nor do they have any such requirement published on their website! And I am wondering why – if the seeding is now mandatory for credit cards too?
Thanks in advance.
As per my knowledge and also after searching RBI notification and other bank status on this, I found that all banks forcing customers to link their Aadhaar to Bank Accounts ONLY.
However, in your case, you are not holding any savings account with Citi Bank but only credit card. As a safety measure, I think they are forcing you to link Aadhaar with Credit Card. Also, there is no harm in that.
